You decided to take a break from social media distractions and tons of; you know, garbage information. It can be so easy to get caught up in the chaos of everyday life and feel burnt out from our day jobs. But you're here, taking a step towards something different. I hope that my story can inspire and encourage you to pursue your own passions and find a sense of fulfillment in your life. So take a deep breath, relax, and let's explore together.
I don’t know you … yet. But let me guess, the reason why you’re here:
You have a good job, or at least it provides what you need to "survive", but you feel there’s something missing. Or, despite earning a healthy income, you may be tired of trading all your time for money to pay for the lifestyle you and your family have become accustomed to. Very likely your pressure and the work demands on your time have seriously affected your family and social life, if you do have one. I'm just a regular guy. The son of a local government employee, grew up in southern Taiwan with my two brothers. My dad put in 40 years, and he is a true believer in the government pension plan. Means as you worked long (hard) enough for the government, with loyalty. You will have your pension, paid monthly. To ensure you and your wife’s basic living needs will be met for the rest of your years. Well, the government did keep their promise, at least for 8 years. But things have changed. The government recently slashed its budget for retiree benefits, including those people who had already retired for years like my dad! I know you may have heard similar stories from someone close to you or your family (I do hope it’s not you, but if it’s not, lucky you are here watching what I’m about to say 😊). But hey, that's what we all have been told, right? Study hard in school, land a good, stable job, and put your head down for 30 years. Perhaps you will have the opportunity to live your social life with the business cards of a Sr. Manager or CEO… that reflects your respectful social status. Boasting an income that many envy. If not, at least you have the chance to save enough money so that when you retire at 65, you won’t have to worry about surviving. Sounds good, doesn’t it? But let’s take a look at what the world has gone through in the past 20 years? The crisis of 2008, crisis of 2012, and then the whole world was knocked down in 2020, followed by post-COVID inflation and wars… I think you’ll agree with me that this world has long since changed, and yet most of us still follow the career paths established since the industrial age. Well, I was one of them, back in 1994…
In 1994, I completed my years of military service after graduating from the university. I had an engineering degree in construction. My girlfriend, who is now my wife, and I decided to live together to save money. We rented a small house. She had also just started her career selling insurance. Most of the time she was doing cold calling and visiting strangers. Driving hundreds of kilometers every week. Make me believe sales was definitely not the kind of my job. Luckily the country’s construction business was looking good. I just need to find a good company and do my job well. Maybe I will soon get a promotion and increase my income hopefully.
I soon found a site management job in a good construction company. I worked super busy, but I was able to quickly build up my professional skills. But one thing is different from what I originally thought. I often have to work 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. The project location is far from where I live, and I can only go home once every two or three weeks. At first, I felt the situation was still under control. My wife occasionally complained that I often couldn't take leaves. Couldn't arrange a pleasant overseas vacation. Then my daughter was born, and friction over caregiving responsibilities became frequent. Until one day, after a three-month long business trip, my wife drove to the airport to pick me up. When I eagerly wanted to hug my baby, my daughter was so frightened by my appearance and she cried. It’s no wonder that when I look in the mirror, I don’t even recognize myself!
You quit your job, or I quit mine?
Family responsibilities are an issue that one cannot avoid. And what is due has finally come. One of us has to take on more of the family responsibilities for the other. She is extremely talented in sales and can easily understand her customers’ thoughts and needs. At that time, my job income seemed to be a relatively stable option. And being away from our daughter for long periods of time often made her heartbroken. Soon, we came to a conclusion. She left her job to assume my responsibilities at home. I persisted in my efforts at work, seeking ways to accelerate the improvement of my family's finances. I am very grateful to her for making career sacrifices to take care of our daughter and maintain our family relationship.
The Internet – Working Anywhere or Everyewhere?
The birth of the Internet, I think was around 1995. For me, from the 1990s to the first decade of this century, technology means it changed how I work, from tons of papers and documents on my desk to all I needed was a laptop and a computer screen. With an internet connection, I can finish any work I was told and comfortably see my paycheck arrive in my bank account every month. During this period, I continued to work hard and accumulated management skills. In 2010, adhering to the "career advancement principle" of changing jobs to obtain higher positions and salaries, I successfully got the opportunity to be a Senior Project Manager, leading project department in an industrial gas company. The way companies make good use of the Internet is by allowing you to use your mobile phone or laptop in the office or anywhere to send emails to get work done. So I can finally go home and be with my family every day. But what hasn’t changed is that I still have to answer calls from clients in my private time. I often have to find a corner where I won’t be disturbed, turn on my laptop, and deal with the problem after dinner or when I’m camping with my family on the mountain during holidays. The Internet seems to have suddenly given bosses a manual for fully exploiting their employees. You need the paycheck, so you can’t say no, even if you look like a successful department manager.
Still working hard – until when?
A good salary and a seemingly decent job position can indeed make you ignore the little voice in your heart. I worked hard for another 10 years, successfully raised two children, and went to college. My house was also changed from a small house with two rooms to a larger one. But I also took on more loans. But anyway, having a “successful” career and raising children are considered responsible life achievements, right? At least, that's what I thought when I ignored the little voice in my heart. Until 2020…
The whole world was struck down, no matter what country you were in. No matter what your job is, I am sure you will never forget this year and what happened after. Of course, I also understand that there are a few industries or Wall Street bankers who are exceptions. My company's industry and my job were also greatly affected. I had to change several jobs, and there was a year-long gap period with no income. Suddenly I began to have time to listen to the little voice in my heart. I used to spend a long time at work, but in fact, I was not fulfilled, and I wasn’t happy. What’s even worse was that I was sacrificing time with my family. And the time that I was supposed to do something I love! Traveling the world and taking lots of great photos. And learn how to play guitar like a pro. (Really, I mean it! No cheat!) If I have a choice, I don’t want to repeat the same life for another 10 years. Financially, my seemingly decent salary could only meet my daily needs and could not give me the quality of life I wanted. I'm 54 now, with 15 years of mortgage left to pay. I have to continue to have a job for an income. But what about after that? I realized I had no answers. A future where the current situation continues is starting to scare me.
Updating my CV and finding my career cure ….?
During this period, I watched a lot of TED talks on various motivational topics. I watched a lot of Tony Robbins videos and tried to find the answer I wanted. I even bought a lot of online courses to learn how to improve productivity, how to communicate for the “leadership”, and some courses like “Guitar courses for 50-year-olds”, “Secrets of pro photos”… (OK, I admit to you that I am less than 30% complete on many of them). I haven't quite found the answer yet, but I'm very fascinated by the idea of using my talents, knowledge, and skills to create online courses and then selling them to people in need all over the world, millions of copies! Well fulfilled by influencing people with my knowledge and skills, helping those in need, and solving their pain and problems. Feeling ultimate satisfaction that I have not been able to get in any of my previous positions. I started to think that maybe the answer to my “Ideal Work and Life” portfolio was on the INTERNET!
Well, it's time to go back to earth. I still need an income. So I opened my LinkedIn page and updated my status to "Open To Work." I know how to manage projects, especially large and complex engineering projects. And I understand where I stand in the market. As always, headhunters started approaching me with possible opportunities. Since I have spent quite some time discovering what I really want from my job. I carefully filtered and focused on the elements that can make me feel satisfied with my work and avoid falling into the trap of crazy long working hours. Finally, I accepted a 26-month contract as a Project Director. As a project management consultant representing our client, I led a small team to manage a Data Center construction project. I think this job will allow me to use my strengths without over-burning. So that I can listen to the little voice in my heart and continue to look for the ultimate answer to “The Ideal Work and Life” that I want.

This was supposed to be an easy job; at least, it was when I went through the job checklist. I gave all my expertise and pushed this construction project from the clueless beginning. To what it should have been when it was originally planned. Until rising wage costs and the inflation monster pushed my budget management performance to the point where I couldn't get out of the monthly review meetings. I received a call from my boss: “Hey, Andy.” They decided to end our contract to save cost. The same consultant from another project will take over. “It’s Not Your Fault”. It was the 10th month of my contract.
I have had enough, but the reality is that, I am once again deciding whether to log in to my LinkedIn profile and change my status. The little voice in my heart tells me that I don’t want to repeat the same work and life for another 10 years. And yet at the same time, from my self-discovery journey a year ago, about the answer to the ultimate work and life. My desire to find the final answer from the Internet began to become stronger.
Time to update my CV? Maybe not…
This moment has always felt familiar for 20 years. I opened my CV to update it, and then changed my status to "active looking". I am not worried about finding the next well-paying project manager job, (well if not counting the crazy long working hours and the extremely annoying bosses I have to serve). But this time it’s a little different. My two kids are old enough. They have their own things to be busy with. My wife is already used to me being away from home, so I have some time to think. In fact, it was the little voice in my heart that became so loud that I couldn’t ignore it. I am pretty sure I have not gotten the satisfaction from a seemingly good salary and a decent business card. What I often do after getting off work is sink into the sofa, scrolling on my phone mindlessly or watching the TV and numbly switching from one channel to another. I could find a new full-time job for the income I need, but I also know I won't find the true fulfillment that I need. And it won't help me any closer to the ideal life I want. I just didn’t have the energy to repeat the same thing yet again. There is a saying that is super wise: “To get something you never have, you need to do something you never did.” I think it’s time to do something I’ve never done.
The Most “Ideal” job ever!
I don’t know yet what will be the thing so-called “never been done before” for me. But I know exactly what I want to get out of it:
1. Geographical freedom, I can work from anywhere (WFH, The best thing that Covid had taught us!)
2. Time freedom, I can work whenever I want. Take a vacation and travel the world anytime I want
3. Profit from a genuine interest or passion. Utilizing my strength
4. Low capital investment, hopefully
5. No cap on my income potential. I can earn as much as I want (You know, quite costive traveling the world. And buying a big house, replacing my car…)
6. Giving something back, helping those who are in need. Volunteering
You must think I'm crazy. How can such a good thing happen to ordinary people like you and me? But I guarantee you are meeting them every day, virtually…. Look at those YouTube channels with millions of subscribers and social media celebrities with millions of fans. You now know what I'm talking about. But guaranteed you will say those people are super talented, and it is absolutely impossible for an ordinary person like me to reach that level. You Are Absolutely Right! So I thought if I could get just a few hundred customers, that it would be a good start.
Time to do something bold
If you like me, used to searching for answers on YouTube. You will also find more and more people now know how to leverage the latest Internet technology. For some odd reason this time, I didn't press skip. I let the video ad rolled to the very end. It was an ordinary middle-aged man who quit his successful, six-figure salary sales job. Learned internet skills and became a digital entrepreneur with a six-figure income, and growing! Isn’t it exactly what I've been looking for? I feel like the door for me has opened. But wait, before I decide to boldly walk into this door, I have to make sure that this is not a scam. After all, they were asking for such a huge commitment from me, my email! And I didn’t want to see tons of junk every day. I spent the rest of the day on their website, watching all the interviews with people from all kinds of backgrounds and all ages who had transformed their lives through the same learning process to become successful digital entrepreneurs. Something I never DID before – Say goodbye to the old hamster wheel
My future path to me has never been clearer than now.
